Auburn Rose at Ariane Studio, Tamworth

It had been a while since I’d been in the studio, and as I’m doing a photo a day project this year I needed no real excuse to head over to Tamworth to see Geoff and the guys at Ariane Studio and take part in one of the fortnightly model group portrait photography shoots. Read on for more images – warning, NSFW content.

The model for this event was Auburn Rose, who was a great model – knowing just how to pose, not requiring any direction, but responding well to any input you gave.

The first setup was a simple ‘white background’ affair – but for this photograph, instead of using my trusty Canon 5D Mark II I went leftfield and got out my Fuji X100…

Is there anything that little camera can’t do? I’d have been happy to continue using it all night, except, rather stupidly I’d left the memory card for it at home and I’d run out of space on the internal memory. D’oh! So, back to the 5D Mark II for the rest of the session.

After white wall we went all the other way to black, and Auburn Rose changed outfit for something a little different.

Time was running short, so another quick outfit and location change was in order. This time we went back to the white wall, but I set up the lighting so it would be coming directly from above using a honeycomb grid over the Elinchrom studio head to provide some seriously dramatic lighting. A strip softbox was employed at low power to add a tiny bit more light, and a reflector on the floor lifted the shadows slightly to create this compelling photograph.

And with that, the evening was over. Thanks to the guys at Ariane Studio for another great night, and to Auburn Rose for being a fantastic model.
