At the weekend I decided to take a trip to Bradgate Park. It’s a country park in Leicester, home to Lady Jane Grey – the ‘Nine Day Queen’. It’s also home to a large amount of deer, and it was they who were the subject of my visit this time. The weather was terribly foggy, but the combination of the white bleakness, the snow covered ground and a stag looking back, checking out what I was up to led to a lovely photograph…

I do like a good sunrise – however, the problem is always being able to drag myself out of a comfortable bed in time to go and get one!
This was one of those rare occasions! About an hour before sunrise, I hauled myself out of my sleeping bag, left my warm tent and took a quick drive down to the village of Corfe Castle. From a quick reconnaisance trip the day before, I had found a vantage point on the hill opposite, so all I now needed to do was climb the hill (much easier said than done!) and wait for the sun to come up!

I was recently delighted to discover that this photograph of a rare Amur Leopard was chosen as one of the runners up in the Amateur Photographer magazine ‘Photographer of the Year’ competition for the ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ round. It came 23rd and was published in the magazine, out of thousands of entries.
