Priests Cove Sunset

Last weekend I packed my car and drove down to a village called St. Just which is near Lands End and Penzance in Cornwall. The aim of my trip was to enjoy a spot of camping and to take come photographs of Cornwall’s amazing shorelines. Inspired by many photographs on flickr I had identified a few locations where I was sure that I’d be able to get some good photographs of my own – weather permitting!

The first evening I ventured out to a small place called ‘Priests Cove’ which is just south of Cape Cornwall (once thought to be the most westerly point in England). The tide was rapidly rising which meant that taking time to set up my shots wasn’t really an option – I had to work quickly!

Here Comes The Sea

I managed to find myself a secluded location which provided some rocks as foreground interest, and was close enough to the sea that the motion of the water would be recorded. I took a number of photographs here, but as is usually the case, the best one was the last one I took, where the rapidly rising tide finally got the better of me as one particularly large wave swept over the rocks I had been using for interest, engulfed them and came to soak me!

Suitably drenched, but happy, I moved on to the next location.

Sunset Swirl

I had been photographing into the sunset for all the time I had been at Priests Cove, so decided to try a different viewpoint away from the sun. This composition interested me as the sea formed into a swirl around the rocks in the middle, as if they were on their own island. Again the sea did the hard work with one large wave coming through and circling around the central rocks being captured perfectly by my Canon 5D Mark II.

Satisfied with the evenings efforts I returned to camp, ready to get an early nights sleep in preparation for the next mornings trip to Porthcurno.
